Credit Card Companies and Going Paperless - Just Say No

Last summer I had a problem with my "travel rewards" credit card. I use it for all charges and have upgraded to some pretty spectacular places! But when my main credit card had been compromised, I started using my "gas rewards"credit card for a very short time. The charges I made didn't account for much. In fact, they were barely enough to file in a small claims court. Time passed and I never received a bill. I can remember thinking, I know I'll get the bill next month for sure, and after a couple of months went by, I couldn't really remember if paid it or not. Since I wasn't getting a bill, and I always pay my bills on time, I figured I had paid it.

Unfortunately, I had not! But they were super busy stabbing me in the back in the meantime. Without any written notice, they began contacting the credit reporting agencies about my delinquent account. Over approximately four months time they caused my FICO score to decrease by close to 150 points. The good news is that my score was so good, it's actually still very high, again, because I pay my bills on time.

It turned out that becuse I wasn't using their card, I was placed on an e-billing cycle on their end. One that doesn't send the bill to my bank, like the better creditors, but to an email address that had been hacked back when I was working as a second grade teacher. Sometime around 2005 or so, the email address they had was spamming all my contacts asking them for money because I had been traveling and was mugged. I tried to close that account, but only succeeded in clearing out the contact list, so no one would get spammed any longer. In theory, they would have received one of those messages, and contacted me, but no such luck.

I finally received a paper bill at home! I opened that paper bill right when I got it, and paid it over the phone. When I informed them about my stolen credit information, they promptly refunded me around $150 of fees! They did this because I never pay my bills late. However, the damage to my FICO score remains as reported, and they refuse to do anything about that, due to company policy.

It was super easy for the credit card company to effect my FICO score, which still causes me to lose sleep over this stupid mistake because: A) someone hacked my email and was trying to scam my family and friends, B) someone got my credit card number and charged two cell phones to the tune of $900 - which I caught and C) I never got the electronic bill sent to the bank. Sheesh. I'm doing the best I can to keep up with scammers and thieves. But it leaves me wondering: While I am getting nailed for allegedly late paying a tiny sum of money, did the person(s) who stole the phones get away with that?

dancing with the stars

Nyle and Peta are told they're safe at the beginning of tonight's show.  In addition to their regular routine, there are three team dances that were each choreographed by a different judge. At the end of the show, one of my favorite dancers gets sent home. Everyone dancing in the competition now is bringing their A game. Surprisingly, Wanya is again in the bottom two, so he really needs votes tonight - if you're into voting early. It's not that he's a lame dancer. He just might not be as popular as the remaining competitors. If you're anything like me, you are already voting for your favorite, and since voting for Jodie is a waste, my votes will be going to Wanya - and maybe Ginger.

DWTS Double Elimination Night

Last week on Dancing With The Stars was "switch-up night," and no one was sent home. That means two celebrity competitors are going to have their mirror ball hopes shattered tonight. There are a couple of team dance routines that will be performed tonight as well. It's called the Battle of the Sexes. The men dance to James Brown and the women dance to Beyonce. If you're anything like me, and you are voting, you like to know who will be going home before you vote. Right?

If you don't want to know. Stop reading now.

The two couples that go home are...

Von/Whitney and Kim/Sasha

Peace From the Ocean

It is sunny and there is a slight breeze tosselling my hair. My dogs are running around gleefully while the roar of waves crash onto the reef below. Their whitecaps threaten to douse me, but I sit just far enough away to avoid even a splash. I am trying to deal with so many sad issues, sorting through the worst of them, as I watch the surfers try to tame the ocean waves. They are rarely successful today. It seems like rectifying the issues with which I am dealing are also like the this tide. Yet I remain calm watching, in contrast to how I feel inside. I can't get enough watching of those waves. When it's time to leave, I turn around once more to see a beauty gently rise, roll for a distance, start to tumble, and then crash on the land, as if to say good-bye. I vow to come back again soon.

Few of my burdens have gone dormant for some time. As much as I would like to believe they will go away, or even evolve enough to become manageable, they seem to remain stagnant. One of them has come back from the past to reek havoc on my lovely home - like a cancer in remission. Two of them remain constant, like the North Star. One of them is new to me, and I have to watch and see what will happen. Still I hope for the best. Like the grief I felt over the loss of my sweet, Hardy, I am reminded that letting go and observing how they change over time is still the best course for me. I am reminded that I like to sit, and wait, and watch for an opening. So I wait for my sorrows to dissolve into something I am better capable of handling, and soon I will come out again to watch the stars dance in the night sky.

Out of Town

I took this pic while standing in the doorway from our room in Pateros. The memorial for my Father-in-law is behind us now. May he rest in peace.

Disney Night on Dancing With The Stars

It was a magical night in the ballroom last Monday night. The dance teams were all decked out in their Disney garb, and they brought fantasy to their dance routines as well. There was a guest judge, Sandaya, and guest animated visitors too – both on ballroom and hanging around. There were many cameo dance appearances from Disney characters after the breaks. Antonio led the celebrity dancers Marla, Nyle, Doug, Kim, Jodie, Von, Ginger, Wanya, and Paige followed respectively. Marla Maples left the competition, to the surprise of her dance partner, Tony, so we are down to 8 competitors next week, and Maks Chmerkovskiy as a guest judge. Will you be watching tomorrow, as the competition gets fiercer?

In order of final scores (out of 40), here is my synopsis of the celebrity teams.

Ginger and Val performed a highly entertaining Foxtrot as Belle and Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. This routine brought them a tie for highest score of the night. Their dance routine was performed to depict a scene in Beauty and the Beast, and had traditional moves mixed in with a cast of backup dancers (which looked like it included dance pros, Tony and Louis) set in a French town, as if they were dancing on Broadway. I loved the end where they were all in hold dancing around a fountain. This routine brought a smile to my face that just won’t go away. I’ve probably watched it over 10 times, because it is so inspiring.
Their score: 36

Paige and Mark danced a playful and lively routine with many visits to the floor as if they were toys that had been visited by humans during their Quickstep Toy Story routine to the song, Friend in Me. Their routine started off in hold doing their traditional moves that had a beautifully executed series of kicks and spins, which brought her around to a scissor kick as he spun her in the air. At some point the 6 soldiers that were standing at attention at the sides came into the dance. They did moves on the floor that were interestingly interspersed with partner moves around the ballroom floor towards the end. They deserved to be tied for first place.
Their score: 36

Wanya and Lindsay were the fiercest competitors, performing their Lion King/Samba routine. They fell from the number 1 spot to tied for second place on the leader board this week. I felt this team was robbed. It may have been due to his costume, which was too baggy to see his excellent moves. He opened the dance in full lion costume, but took off the headpiece for their dance. She looked astonishing in her cat face makeup, wild hair, and cat fur leotard. Their performance was entertaining and invigorating. The choreography was modern, but also had traditional moves that were performed expertly. He will be in the finals.
Their score: 35

Antonio and Sharna danced a jazz routine to Friend Like Me. Antonio wore a white 3-piecesuit with sequined, gold vest, and white hat. Sharna looked hot in a pastel blue Princess Jasmine costume. Their routine dazzled, and held a high kick line with four backup dancers. The choreography was an interesting mix of Antonio’s style with ballroom dance moves.
Their score: 35

Von and Whitney looked elegant and poised as they sparkled on the ballroom floor to a Cinderella themed Viennese Waltz. This routine was one of my favorites, and this team most certainly gets my best-dressed nod for the night. He looked like a prince in a white sparkle tux with blue trim and black boots. She wore a smoky blue ballroom gown that was alight below the waist. Their routine was magical and romantic, filled with traditional steps and a variance in speed. Bruno said it best, “I am totally enchanted.” Their score was surprisingly low for the performance they gave.
Their score: 32

Nyle and Peta danced a non-traditional, thumping samba in a Tarzan theme. They wore loincloth type clothes, with the most outstanding part being his longhaired wig. Their routine was vigorous and included a lot of movement and even had pounding on a set of pot and pan, “bongo” drums. This was the routine that one of the judges should have called, “booming,” to quote Antonio Brown and son.
Their score: 34

Kim and Sasha danced their Quickstep routine in a Jungle Book dance routine to the song, I Wanna Be Like You. As much as I love Kim, I can’t say much nice about this dance, but not based on the dancing. It was because of their hideous costumes. They both had brown Park Ranger colored tops, but her yellow chiffon skirt made her look awful– and she is lovely! They had 4 backup dancers that were a nice addition, but one of them was wearing a green sequin costume that clashed with everyone else. The choreography was traditional, and it looked like she hit all the steps ok, but because of the costumes, this seemed like a smoke and mirror routine.
Their score: 32

Jodie and Keo had a tough night performing their Zootopia themed Cha Cha. She made visible mistakes in routine, and although she really held her poise throughout them, the judges were quick to judge and penalize her. I believe this routine wasn’t traditional enough, and they seemed to either miss connecting with one another, or the choreography had her dancing alone too. Jodie obviously has talent as a dancer, but I’m not sure why we didn’t see it. I’m starting to think it’s Keo’s inexperience – and I love his dancing. I believe he needs some tutoring from a seasoned dancer from the show (I’m thinking Derrick). It will be unfortunate if Jodie gets sent home next week. I was surprised to learn she was in the bottom 2 at the end of the show.
Their score: 27

Marla and Tony danced their Little Mermaid themed dance in an underwater set. Their waltz routine was their best dance to date. This was a beautiful routine. It contained a moment where Marla stood in arabesque while Tony slowly spun her in a circle. There was another part where he held her under her arms, twirled her in the air, and gently threw her swirling onto the floor. I loved this routine, and was disappointed at her low score for the night.
Their score: 28

Doug and Karina danced a cute Marry Poppins themed Jazz routine to the song, Spoon Full of Sugar. I really liked this routine, but the judges didn’t. He was dressed in a black button up, black pant, and checkered black and white vest, and hat. She came in with a long red double-breasted coat, which she removed to reveal the cutest white and red backless dress, and an adorable pair of white and red shoes. Their Jazz routine had a little illusion mixed in with some acrobatic moves as well as the Charleston and Moonwalk. It intensified into Quickstep type moves towards the end and was quite entertaining.
Their score: 24

Surprisingly, the two celebrity dance teams that were in the bottom two were Jodie and Marla. It was sad to see Marla go home, but she was gracious as she said good-bye at the end of the show.

Dancing With The Stars – Most Memorable Year Night

Week three was the DWTS “Most Memorable Year” night, and included singer, Andra Day, as a guest on the show. What follows is designed to spark your memory about the costumes, the dances, the scores, and other noteworthy points about this past week of competition. The celebrity dance order was: Ginger, Doug, Kim, Von, Marla, Antonio, Paige, Jodi, Mischa, Wanya, and Nyle. I have written my recap about the dance teams below in order from highest score to lowest score. In the final moments it was announced that those who voted would be permitted to select switch up partners and their dances for a show that will air two weeks following this episode. Next week will be Disney night with Sandaya as a guest judge. As the final credits rolled, the second celebrity left the ballroom competition. For more details about who left the show, scroll down to the bottom of this post.

Nyle/Peta
Nyle’s most memorable year was 2012. It was the year the DWTS deaf contestant traveled the world without an interpreter. They danced the Tango. He wore a dark blue suit with a high waist vest style jacket, a black shirt, and a royal blue tie. She wore what looked like a dark blue halter bodysuit paired with a pleated pant. Their dance was fast paced and highly entertaining with a nice pose in the middle as well as several kicks and spins. It ended as they walked off hand in hand past a single chair. They also walked away with the highest score of the night.
Their score: 25

Wanya/Lindsay
1996 was the year Wanya marked as most memorable. It was the year when Boys II Men sang the National Anthem after a terrorist attack - in front of their largest audience. They danced the Waltz to the BIIM acapella rendition of the Anthem. He looked handsome in a red three-piece suit with tails and black bow tie. She wore a red cutaway evening gown with a lengthy slit down the leg. Their Waltz was graceful and elegant. Len thought Wanya lost his posture in parts of the dance, but the other judges were complimentary.
Their score: 24

Paige/Mark
2014 was Paige’s memorable year because it was the year of her first UFC fight. Paige was inspired to become a fighter because of being bullied in high school, and she recounted her story about that time as well. They danced the Paso Doble inside the set of a mock octagon, UFC fight ring. She wore a black and gold two-piece costume with a fringe short skirt. He wore embellished boxing shorts with black compression leggings underneath. They were both barefoot. Their Paso routine mimicked a fight with lots of kicks and punches combined with traditional Paso dance moves. It was too contemporary for Len.
Their score: 23

Jodi/Keo
This past year was Jodi’s most memorable year. She tells the story about her fame from Full House ending and how it influenced her ensuing drug and alcohol abuse. This year marked her sobriety for 5 years and a reintroduction to acting in Fuller House, a new Netflix series. She said it was a gift to go back to working at something she loved again. They danced the Foxtrot to a live Andra Day song, Rise Up. The dance was an elegant, emotional, passionate interpretation. She wore a long, mauve colored evening gown. He wore a mauve tuxedo shirt and black pant. All the judges were complimentary.
Their score: 23

Kim/Sasha
1976 was her most memorable year, when she booked and filmed her first television commercial. Kim's family left Harlem for the commercial in Los Angeles. The commercial was the launch of her acting career. They danced the Foxtrot to the Facts of Life theme song, in costumes and on a set that depicted the same theme in red and blue. It was a polished routine, although quite basic. They were trying to get the feel of going back in time, and they achieved that goal. After a complimentary review from Len, Kim jumped for joy.
Their score:  22

Ginger/Val
First to dance tonight were Ginger and Val. They practiced in New York. Her most memorable year was 2013 – when she met her future husband, became engaged, and started her family. They danced to the song, Home, because her family and her home are what’s most important to her. She wore a simple peach dress trimmed in soft flowing lace, and he wore a light blue button up that was partially tucked into khaki colored jeans. They danced a contemporary routine, barefoot, which had two lifts and ended with a moment that implied that she would become pregnant. Her baby was brought in as the judges gave their score, and although she tried to quiet her child, the infant was inconsolable.
Their score: 21

Marla/Tony
1993 was the year she gave birth to her daughter Tiffany, and her most memorable year. She discussed a little about her ex-husband, Donald Trump. They divorced in 2000, and it sounded like she enjoyed being a single mom. She wore a v-neck, drop-waist yellow dress with blue embellishments, and a blue mock petticoat at the hem that flared out when she twirled. He wore a yellow blazer trimmed in blue with a blue puzzle piece on his lapel, blue tie, white shirt, and blue pant. They danced the Jive to the Pharrell Williams song, Happy. It was an athletic routine that had a flip/roll over Tony’s back, as well as other lively Jive moves.
Their score: 21

Doug/Karina – Best Costumes of the Night
In 2015, on the day his father passed away, Doug’s mom kissed his father on the forehead, and then she passed away – on the same day. This family tragedy was his most memorable year. They danced the Waltz in what I thought was the best costumed pair of the night. He looked dapper in a gray vest and suit pant ensemble. She wore a sheer white nightgown with sheer parts that were accented by a row of buttons down her back. She also had a beautiful hair fascinator that accented the adorned bodice of the front of her dress. Their routine was an emotional romantic twirl of a waltz that stunned the audience and judges alike. Doug unfortunately ends up in the bottom three at the end of this show. If he goes home next week, it will be a shame.
Their score: 20

Von/Whitney
2016 was his most memorable year because his NFL football team, the Denver Broncos, won the Super Bowl. They danced a Contemporary routine to a song by Phil Collins, In The Air Tonight, because he would listen to that song before every game. He wore charcoal gray sweatpants and went shirtless, except for a gold cross on a chain showing off his tattooed torso. She wore a dark blue bodysuit with a long, sheer wrap skirt. Their routine contained many lifts, one with a throw, and another while she posed on his shoulders as he twirled. This routine looked challenging and graceful at the same time. Carrie Ann gave the harshest criticism of the judges, although Len gave the lowest score. This couple deserved a higher score because of the difficulty of the choreography.
Their score: 20

Antonio/Sharna
Antonio’s most memorable year was 2007.  He was a freshman in college, and he broke a record the same day his son was born. They danced the Foxtrot with his son, Antonio Jr., in mauve colored costumes to the song, 7 Years, by Lukas Graham. Antonio and son wore matching three-piece suits, and his son joined into the dance at the end of the dance at a poignant moment in the song. Her floor length gown was backless and embellished on the bodice. The judges weren’t critical, but also not very complimentary. His daughter also made an appearance on the show as Antonio and Sharna received their scores.
Their score: 20

Mischa/Artem
Her year was 2008 when the OC was “at its prime.” She discussed how she left the show that year to recover the turmoil she felt that stemmed from her overnight success. They danced the Samba and she ran onto the dance floor taking off her long sparkle coat to reveal a sparkle tee and short costume. He wore a black casual outfit with a denim jacket. Their dance came across fun and happy. The judge’s reviews were positive, but they all gave the dance a 6.
Their score: 18

The Conclusion/Elimination
The conclusion of the show was the elimination portion that placed Doug, Mischa, and Jodi in the bottom three. Mischa left the show this week. She was poised while delivering her final words, saying that it was a “wonderful experience.”

Marla/Tony dance the Jive in dedication to Tiffany Trump’s birth year.

Doug/Karina dance the Waltz in honor of his dad… Emotional dance. Karina wears a beautiful white ballroom gown.

Antonio/Sharna dance the Foxtrot. Antonio celebrates the love of his son, who is there in the audience.

Paige/Mark They dance the Paso Doble inside a boxing ring set celebrating her first ring fight. They get a 24 total score.

Ginger/Val dance Contemporary with love and support from her sweet family who are in the audience.

Nyle/Peta dance the Tango

Jodie/Keo dance the Foxtrot  to what sounded like Andra's song, Rise Up.

Kim/Sasha Foxtrot

Wanya/Lindsay dance to the National Anthem by BoysIIMen

Surprise announcement: Zendaya will be a guest judge next week for Disney Night.

Who goes home?

Mischa/Artem, Doug/Karina, and Jodie/Keo are the bottom three.

Mischa/Artem go home.  In her exit interview, she said she loved working with everyone, and has enjoyed the journey. She feels like this experience has made her stronger. Artem said their experience was like being on a roller coaster. He said, the beginning was a challenge for them, and felt badly that now that they are just starting to get things right, they have to go home.

DWTS - 1st Elimination

It was Latin Night, and the first elimination show, on Dancing With The Stars this past week. Here is my breakdown of what happened.

Jodie/Keo
In their rehearsal, Jodie got frustrated and said she was feeling the pressure. She eventually stormed out of the room to cry in the women’s restroom. Keo said not to be desperate, and she apologized. They danced the Samba. She was wearing a gold sequin one piece with a fringe flair bottom. He wore a neutral sparkle pant with gold body paint across his chest and around his biceps. The routine looked like fun with a lot of shaking and shimmying. I saw no mistakes in their routine.
Their score: 21

Marla/Tony
In rehearsal, Marla said she was out of her comfort zone by trying to be sexy and pushing her inner limits. Tony said she lives a wholesome, healthy, spiritual lifestyle, calling her a “bit of a hippy.” They danced the Argentine Tango. She wore a backless, red dress with a black lace overlay. He wore a black pant and black vest with a red button up underneath. Their routine was at the beginning to intermediate level. She stumbled a little at the beginning and her legs looked weak throughout the dance. She needs to improve if she wants to remain on the show.
Their score: 20

Geraldo/Edyta
Geraldo did a parody of a “president” Donald Trump. He said he has no feeling in his right foot due to a prior back surgery. Their routine opened up with him sitting at the Oval office, and hanging up on Vladimir Putin to dance the Salsa with Edyta. He wore a blond wig, a floral long sleeve holiday shirt and black pant, he had orange hued skin. She wore a hot pink sequin body suit with a boa bustle on her bum, shaking it wildly as she danced around him, which seemed designed to serve more as a distraction to hide his mediocre dancing.
Their score: 13

Paige/Mark
Mark watched his partner dance from afar, due to a back injury. They aired a conversation that happened in rehearsal about his strength doing the lifts, and her insecurity about it. He injured himself pulling her up through his legs at their Camera Blocking rehearsal on the day before the show aired. She danced the Salsa with a substitute dancer, Alan. She wore a pink sequin body suit with an attached fringe angular skirt bottom. He wore a hot pink unbuttoned long sleeve shirt and black pant. She looked strong and didn’t miss a step of their intense routine that had her getting thrown around like a rag doll, and she did it all with a different partner! It was impressive to say the least.
Their score: 24

Antonio/Sharna
Antonio was challenged to bring out the sexy with Sharna during their Rumba routine. He wore an unbuttoned pale purple/gray long sleeve shirt and gray pant. She wore a skimpy gray sequin backless bodysuit with a delicate gray veil draped around her hips. It was sexy. He had great lines and energy. The routine didn’t look too challenging, but they definitely had chemistry.
Their score: 19

Kim/Sasha
Kim said she felt frustrated with her dancing ability, and cried about Sasha's critique of their turns. He felt sorry for her, so he got Gloria Estefan to video chat with them at their rehearsal. This raised her spirits dramatically. They danced the Salsa to Estefan’s song, Conga. She wore a sparkle bodysuit with a green fringe bottom, and he wore an unbuttoned lime green shirt with a white pant. The choreography was a little focused on the upper body, but her legs looked strong, and there was an excellent dip. She didn’t miss a beat until the very end.
Their score: 19

Nyle/Peta
Nyle says he sets the bar high for himself, and his performance didn’t disappoint. Now that he has made it evident that he can dance, even with his hearing disability, he says he wants to continue to improve over time. They danced the Rumba. He wore a white button up shirt and black pant, and she wore a silky white flowing dress. The routine was beautiful, sexy, and well executed. Unfortunately, they were docked for doing a lift.
Their score: 20

Mischa/Artem
Mischa discussed Len’s critique from last week, and while she tried to stay positive, it was obvious that she felt poorly about it. In rehearsal she came across as uninspired and confused and said she didn’t feel confident. They danced the Cha Cha. She wore an orange hued headband with a flower in her hair, a yellow crop top and uneven hemmed skirt. He wore an unbuttoned orange long sleeve shirt and white pant. His goal for her was to have fun. The routine was extremely basic, but she didn’t look as awkward as last week. She walked off after receiving their scores leaving the cast members looking uneasy.
Their score: 15

Von/Whitney
Von calls Whitney a super small Barbie drill sergeant. They danced an untraditional Cha Cha on a taco stand set that looked a little like West Side Story. He wore a purple bandana across his brow, a white tee shirt with a purple bomber jacket, and a black Latin style pant. She wore a two-piece floral, sequin bustier and skort with a cropped jean jacket and the cutest athletic wedged sneakers. Their routine was intermediate, and had a nice break in the middle that showcased his personal dance style. They had four extra dancers who backed them up in the later part of the routine. It was an entertaining performance.
Their score: 20

Wanya/Lindsay
These two rehearsed this past week while Wanya was on the road with Boys II Men. They danced the Salsa. He wore a low cut silky royal blue long sleeve shirt and royal blue pant. She wore a cutaway sequined royal blue bodysuit with a short bustle. Their routine had drops, swing elements, a lot of wiggle, and their road rehearsals didn’t make any difference. They were very, very good. The choreography looked difficult and polished. This is the couple to beat! Erin remarked that Wanya has lost 15 lbs. already.
Their score: 24

Doug/Karina
Doug seems to be truly enjoying this competition. He said he was channeling his family’s fight with his son’s autism for this performance. They danced the Paso Doble. He wore a black tank with a thin black cummerbund at his waist, and a black pant. She wore silky red flowing tea length dress that crisscrossed at her chest. They danced with four extra male dancers. He was throwing her around like a cape, as he should for this dance, and he brought power and charisma to his performance. Their routine had intermediate choreography that used a lot of space on the ballroom floor. He brings more grace to the competition than one might expect. I don’t think he should go home anytime soon.
Their score: 20

Ginger/Val
Ginger said she felt “at home” on the ballroom stage, and Val said this week’s goal was for her to work on her “swag” or in other words: bring on the sexy. They danced the Samba. She wore a cute little black ruffle dress with a colorful petticoat under the flare portion, and an aqua blue hair fascinator to finish the look. He wore an unbuttoned black blazer with white trim along the edges and a blue pant. This couple get my best-dressed award for the night. Their choreography contained a cute story about an argument. It was performed to Justin Bieber’s song, Sorry. The routine contained all the basics, but unfortunately, she delivered a few missteps.
Their score: 21

Who Went Home:
This was an elimination night with Mischa/Artem and Doug/Karina in the bottom three along with Geraldo Rivera, who went home this week.

… This Blog entry is dedicated to my father-in-law who watched the show for the first time with us when he came to visit several years ago. I believe he was hooked after that. He called the show, “Dancing with the Ladies.” He was always up for going out for a night of dancing, when he was still able. Dancing was what he chose to do on his first date with his second wife. I have faith that he is dancing again with ease and grace, just as he had as a young gentleman when he was living in this world.

About Tonight - DWTS Week 1

Here are a few West Coast spoilers worth noting from the Dancing With The Stars show that airs tonight...

Kim Fields dances early in the show, and does a good job, but makes a mistake at the end of her routine. She seemed happy with her scores, however.

Jodie gets some support from at least one of her Fuller House cast mates.

Geraldo doesn't do very well, but wishes to inspire people to get off the couch and dance. He says we will all have time to be still when we are done with our lives.

Antonio dances a Rumba but rumor has it that he doesn't practice seriously enough. He just shows up on his own schedule. Still, he gets great scores.

Lyle dances a Rhumba and gets his score lowered because they do a lift in their routine. The audience boos the lowered scores.

Paige may dance with Maks because Mark B. hurt his back during practice. He may have a slipped disk.

Mischa doesn't get very high scores dancing the Cha Cha.

Doug may do a Heisman pose in his Paso Doble

Von dances a Cha Cha with a good mix of both traditional moves and his own style with a score of 20.

Someone goes home tonight. Who will it be?

Geraldo - as I predicted in my last blog entry.

Nyle Dimarco Wows on Dancing With The Stars

Last night I watched DWTS for a second time. Confession, I enjoy watching twice - not for the judges comments, nor for the packages, but for the dancing. I like to watch and judge for myself without any of the distractions, because let's face it, there are a lot of them. A new one for me is their Twitter feed that airs simultaneously during the live taping of the show (which translates to an earlier time than the show airs on television). I followed that for the first time last week, and I loved it. I got a head's up about what was to come during the show. For example, I learned that Nyle and Peta were going to be good - very, very good, and that my prediction about Geraldo Rivera was way off.

I don't vote after the first show, or for many weeks that follow because I have an ethical dilemma, which I will discuss later. I do vote in the last few shows because it's important. I've seen at least one or two major league contenders get ousted before their time, and I've learned that I don't like the feeling when I didn't do anything to stop one of my faves from going home. If I did vote, I would have divided them equally between my top three who were: Wanya/Lindsay, Paige/Mark, and Nyle/Peta - in that order. I expect to be voting for these three, when I do finally get into that aspect of the show because I expect they will be in the running until the finals. Barring any strange injuries or outside career responsibilities, those three are the ones who will go the distance.

On the first show, there are inevitably stars who improve over time, and/or don't get scored as well as I believe they should have. This is what happened to Kim Fields. I thought she danced surprisingly well, but didn't get a score that represented it. Doug Flutie was also in this category. I was pleasantly surprised by his grace. The stars I thought earned an appropriate score, but will continue improve over time (and become threatening to the leaders) are: Jody Sweetin, Antonio Brown, and Von Miller. These three clearly have moves that have yet to be seen. I expect some sort of conflict with Antonio, however; he needs to tone down his ego and stop fooling around if he's going to get to his A game.

Like me, I believe the judges are distracted by the hype too (or perhaps there's a bit of producer influence on them), whatever the case, there are dancers who give a great performance, but got scores that I felt were too high. Yes. I said too high. This was the case for Marla Maples and Ginger Zee. Both of these ladies seem committed and can dance, but I felt their scores weren't that accurate. They should have been lower by about a point.

Which brings me to the bottom two, and why I wish we could vote people off in the beginning - not vote for the ones we want to continue. It is my ethical dilemma, and why I don't vote at all, or why I vote for someone who may not deserve it, by using all of my votes for the one person who I believe is going home and shouldn't. Why the dilemma? Because it just wouldn't be healthy to vote someone off  DTWS. It's like giving the thumbs down to someone who is trying to perform their best public dance. It's like giving someone the "you suck" vote. It's just not right, and that's ultimately why I just watch and wait.

BUT if I could have voted anyone off the show, it would have been Mischa Barton, not that it would matter. She will go home soon, and it will be agony watching her dance (kinda like how I felt about Paula Dean). I doubt she will be the one going home though. It will be Geraldo Rivera, who is, unfortunately, the one that I believe shouldn't go home yet. Granted, neither of these two were very good, but I felt Geraldo brought more charisma and charm than Mischa, who at best looked like an awkward, ugly duckling, and at worst, looked like she didn't even want to be there. Geraldo on the other hand, seemed happy to be there, and brought better moves than Mischa.

Season 22 - Dancing with the Stars

I can't remember the last time I've been so excited to see DWTS. In case you've been living under a rock, the line up is as follows...

Jodie Sweetin & Keo Motsepe
Antonio Brown & Sharna Burgess
Paige Vanzant & Mark Ballas
Wanya Morris & Lindsay Arnold
Marla Maples & Tony Dovolani
Doug Flutie & Karina Smirnoff
Mischa Barton & Artem Chigvintsev
Von Miller & Witney Carson
Kim Fields & Sasha Farber
Geraldo Rivera & Edyta Sliwinska
Nyle Dimarco & Peta Murgatroyd
Ginger Zee & Val Chmerkovskiy

When I look at this list of mirrorball hopefuls, what jumps out first are the 3 NFL players who were a major force on the football field. This pleases me because it helps quell my longing for the next football season. After that, I notice the mix of television personalities who are likely there to promote their latest project. Of these, I am most interested in watching Ginger Zee, weather forecaster for GMA, but Jodie Sweetin is a close second because I want Keo to have a partner who can actually bring it - for a change. I believe Marla Maples is there just to remind us that Mr. Trump owns the television ratings, but like just about everything else we see about the Republican primary candidate, it doesn't make him look very presidential.

Wanya Morris probably has moves from his experience on stage with Boys II Men, but is he popular enough to go far?  Not likely, but he will be around long enough to dance the rhumba to "I Swear."  Male model, Nyle Dimarco will get enough of the women's vote to keep him on the show for awhile too, simply because he is so easy on the eyes. We are going to have wait and see about his dancing, because his deafness will certainly make competing for the win a challenge. All that being said, I think the surprise contestant will be Geraldo Rivera. He is going to have better moves than we think, a little like Donny Osmond but without the trophy. Paige VanZant, the Ultimate Fighter, is my sight unseen pick for the win. She is paired with Mark Ballas - and he never gets a lousy partner. I plan to weigh in next week after I watch tomorrow night's show, to recap and make a more educated choice.

Loretta Lynch, FIFA Slayer

Did you happen to catch Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, on The Late Show With Steven Colbert? On some rainy day, when lazily lounging around with time to spare, I recommend watching - if only to observe someone who passionately believes in justice. She calls herself, The FIFA Slayer. Hearing her talk about justice, however, was inspiring and filled me with hope, especially in terms of Law Enforcement relationships with Americans.

She also discussed iDevice Privacy, and said the Justice Department is asking the powers that be to disable the password erase function. This is the function that erases all data from an iDevice when the password gets entered incorrectly on the tenth try. It is there to protect our privacy, but in the case of National Security, she believes there should be a loophole in the policy. She was referring to the terrorists from the San Bernardino crisis.

A member of the Obama Administration cabinet, she seeks to maintain the Justice Department's integrity - her motivation: to keep the American people safe, while restoring our faith in the justice system. With eloquence and poise, she spiked my curiousity.  Not knowing much about FIFA, I decided to do a little research about the organization and Her role in its slaying. What I discovered was fascinating and I found myself searching for more than just the Wikipedia article, ending a day later by viewing a watch later video I had discovered on YouTube titled, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (which I also highly recommend).

I have relatives, who I like to believe are quite brilliant. Because they are avid soccer fans (they call it football), their family unit takes an annual trip to wherever the World Cup is held. I still have a little bit of paper money and a postcard from their trip to Buenos Aires. They came home with their knowledge of Spanish stronger than ever, which I envied. But I have to ask... How can they love a sport that is so corrupt. Or should I say, was?

There's Fungus Among Us

About 3 years ago one rainy morning, I awoke to discover my doggie, Roxie, vomiting profusely. After only a few hours she was vomiting blood, and I was watching her fade. Fast. After a panic stricken drive to the vet, she was admitted and directly put on an IV. Several hours later, she was fine, and I was told that my quick action could have saved her life. They said she had likely been poisoned. The first culprit, a poisonous mushroom - which I believed was highly unlikely.

Fast forward, and I learn that a corner patch in my yard, the very same place where I discovered her losing it, is full of the little beasts pictured below. I'm not sure if they are what caused her illness, but it sure looks like convincing evidence - after the fact. Even the mushroom looks kind of sickly.

'Tis the season for volunteer mushrooms, so pet lovers, take action. Please take the time to check your yard and remove these little devils, even if they look harmless. Remember, we don't get to know when our precaution has saved a life - but if we become painfully aware when we've missed that opportunity. By that time, it's usually too late.

Believe - and You Will Succeed

Most of us know little about the gifted and talented population. As a public school teacher, I learned quickly that there are several myths about this group of people. Every parent believes their child falls into this category, an obvious falsity. Parents also truly believe that studying for the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) exam given each year around this time, will help their child into the infamous cluster group. Again, not true. Finally, there are those who believe that if their child tests into the GATE program, it will ensure success. This couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, the statistics are bleak for the academic misfits who are labeled as GATE. That said, I was always pleased to get to know, and eventually challenge the one or two GATE students in my classroom each year.

We educators have had a tiny number of these students pass through our lives. Now that I'm retired from that profession in the traditional sense, I still find myself educating impressionable minds in my daily life. For example, yesterday I found myself "reffing" a basketball game at the local park between a girl, approx. age 8, and a younger boy. They played half court - to 5. It was a close game, but the girl pulled off the win, by one point. Because she was so good, it made me stop and think. Up until now, most, if not all, of my work has been with kids who have been academically gifted, not athletically gifted. In fact, up until this past week, I've never considered how some people are physically gifted, and in doing so, I have overlooked a valid population.

Next week I embark on a journey that takes me back to my birthplace, as a tutor for high school football players - who are most likely athletically gifted. I could not be more pleased, not just to be able to teach again, but also for the revelation. In my career, I have had only one student who aspired to become NFL worthy - and he currently plays center for the local High School. I remember helping this boy learn to read in 2nd grade. When the light bulb went on for him, he became an avid reader. Math wasn't a problem, but writing was a huge challenge. I am pleased to report that he could get the job done after our time together - quite well, if I do say so myself. I am acutely aware of the differences here, but as I prepare myself to tutor what I believe is the equivalent of one of our future gladiators, I believe that there are some things that come naturally, and the rest can be learned. The mental trick for all of us is in believing it to be so.

How One Who Loves a Garden Takes a Bath

Last weekend Brad and I went to the coast to celebrate Valentine's Day.  While there, we experienced the most exquisite sunset. I snapped this photo of it with my old camera phone. It has been touched up a bit, but this depiction is how I remembered it. One week later, and I realized that I needed to share it here. At the end of the day, it was the only photo I wanted to post.

What does it have to do with taking a bath?

Because taking a good bath is an art, and I am a professional bath taker, so I would know.  In fact, I just got out of the tub with a few ideas about how to really enjoy a bath which I'd like to share. I must note that I realize it is a huge water waster. The bigger the tub, the more guilt one must endure and let go, but large or small, take the time to get in one soon.

Here's how to make the experience a little better...

First, pour in your bath salts and start running the water at a nice warm temperature. The salts don't have to be expensive or scented, but they are great for alleviating your aches and pains, and afterwards it makes the water good for watering plants (I'll get to that part later). Also, make sure to have a decent amount of bottled water to drink, and remember to hit the play button on your favorite relaxing playlist before you get in too.

I like to start with a hot bath, leaving some room to add water later. I add cooler water when I wash up at the end. I give myself a time limit, because just like a massage, all good things must come to an end, but like most folks, I have responsibilities. About 10 minutes before I get out, I add the cooler water, and as I wash off, I psyche up for what's to come: bailing the water for my garden. When I get out, I don't drain the water (it's not very dirty, but even if it was, plants live in dirt so I don't worry about it).

Before I bail, however, I do apply a lot of lotion to my whole body, and I suggest you do too. I relax a bit more before bailing, with a different more upbeat playlist. When I'm ready (dressed with hair and basic makeup done), I put Miracle Grow in the tub water, and I use my 4 buckets of water to begin watering my flower garden and fruit trees. I do this in an assembly line fashion. I fill all 4 buckets, I cart them all to the bottom of the stairs in the first heat. Then I water the plants in the second heat. Sometimes I rest in between, but I repeat this process until all the water is gone. It's a great workout and my garden is gorgeous!

Beast Mode - Part 2

The room was sparsely filled at first, but the crowd increased exponentially as the first hour passed.  Most folks stood along side the bar, drinkless, waiting for the celebrity bartenders to pour them their first cocktail. Not us. We got on with it, and parked ourselves near the dance floor, making small talk with some of the San Francisco 12s, who had shown up in their number 24 jerseys. Again, not us. We were dressed for a night on the town.

Up to a certain point, most of the people in the room were what one might expect to see in a night club, but they all had a single purpose other than to party: they wanted to meet Marshawn. The wait got really interesting when a 6 foot tall, blond woman, basically captured the crowd's interest for about 30 minutes. Like a reality show diva, she danced around, aiming her camera phone flash on herself as she moved. She wore thigh high red boots, a short skirt, a skimpy revealing blouse, and had a hoop piercing in her nose. Brad and I couldn't decide if her silky long mane was a wig or a weave.

When he came into the room, it was obvious. The crowd thickened along the bar, and practically everyone's camera was aimed towards him. He was wearing a simple black tee shirt, with a long gold chain that was suspending a thick ring and a golden Beast Mode symbol. His hair was braided, and he had a black hat on his head. He looked happy, and got straight to work, lining up about 8 highball glasses in a row - filling them up as he worked his arm over the lot. This cleared out the first group, and made room for me. I was grateful the blonde woman with the flash was near, or my old iPhone 3 wouldn't have captured a thing.

The next thing I knew, the side door swung open, and Kenny Mayne walked into the room. I reached out and shook his hand as he made his way around the bar to help serve. The blonde woman was to my left, working a weight bearing pillar like a pole dancer, while I stood there wondering if I would ever get served a drink. Then he looked towards me and the lady next to me. He seemed to recognize her. We were both served a glass of wine, and shortly afterward, I learned she was Cooper Helfet's mom. The pic below has been cropped to show his face as he recognized her. I'm not apologizing for the quality, and I think he'd like it that way.

Beast Mode Night in SF - Part 1

Brad and I hustled down the dimly lit San Francisco street towards a huge Jeep that was parked diagonally up ahead. Two fairly large, intimidating men were standing next to it, like guards, on the sidewalk. I double checked the address where we were headed, it was correct. But there was no door to the night club, Verso, in sight. I looked at the Jeep, again, this time noticing an angular shape in the form of the capital letter B on the door. "It's the Beast Mode symbol," I said aloud.

The next thing I knew they were opening the doors of the car and showing us how it had been customized both inside and out. It reminded me of the bat mobile a little, only on steroids. Money had obviously been spent making this vehicle a one of a kind collector's item - fit for someone very wealthy to own. One of the men pointed out that it would be auctioned off and the proceeds would go to Marshawn Lynch's charity, Family 1st Family Foundation, which was what had brought us there in the first place. We wanted to attend the organization's NFL Celebrity Bartending Event, starring Beast Mode himself, but we didn't have tickets.

Our plan was to arrive early, purchase tickets, grab dinner someplace, and come back when the party started. We were about to learn that this would be a bit of a challenge, however. After an interesting conversation with the men about life, football, the movie Concussion, volunteering for Family 1st, and how obtaining tickets needed to be done online, we decided it best to go sort things out elsewhere, and come back when the doors were open. We headed towards the symphony hall, knowing there had to be someplace to eat nearby.

It turned out we would have no trouble finding a restaurant, but after consuming a delicious dinner, we remained ticketless. We wandered back to the night club, passing by venues for both the NFL Honors Awards, and an event featuring Bennet Omalu, the doctor Will Smith played in the movie, Concussion. This time we found a line of about 15 persons outside our event. To our delight, one of the men we had befriended earlier, Boon, recognized us. Knowing our predicament, he came over, pulled us from the line, and ushered us inside the night club.

The inside was illuminated in a deep ocean blue color, and had a long, well stocked bar along the left wall. There were two floors of VIP booths that surrounded the room stocked with wine buckets and champagne glasses, and there was a decent sized dance floor in the center with a DJ booth up front. Hip hop music was playing, and the floor vibrated a little in time with the bass. We were among the first guests inside Verso. The night was young, and held the promise of meeting perhaps one of the best running backs of all time, Beast Mode, Marshawn Lynch.

To be continued...

Wild Card Weekend

There were four playoff football games this weekend, and I watched every one of them. Here are my thoughts about the games in chronological order.

Chiefs v Texans
Yawn. The Texans did not play well at home, despite JJ Watt playing so many positions... some of them downright inspired. But alas, one man does not a team make. They went down 30 to nothing.  Predictable, but so sad to watch. Give that man some teammates.

Steelers v Bengals
Brutal. Hard to watch. I have nothing good to say about this game. It was an unprofessional contest that anyone who watched would have been fortunate to miss. Several of the players (the ones who were fined and/or suspended afterwards) should be ejected from the league. This was an example of what NOT to do, on both sides. If this keeps up, I'm done with the NFL. The movie, Concussion, should be required viewing for each player and coach that played in this game.

Seahawks v Vikings
Frigid. I felt cold watching this game. It had a low score, but was cool (sorry) because of the surprise ending. The Hawks got the W after a missed Field Goal in the last few seconds of the game. The weather was everyone's greatest opponent. I don't believe in luck, or divine intervention in a football game. I believe the placement of the football, the idea of Richard Sherman flying in from the corner, the time-out taken by the Vikings, and the subzero temperature all contributed to the missed field goal. Any score during the entire game took extreme perseverance, athleticism, skill, and pure guts. These were the true gladiators of the day. It was an epic, historic game that could have gone either way.

Packers v Redskins
Slimy. The Green Bay Packers used to be fun to watch! I used to hail Aaron Rogers as one of the greats. But my respect for him has developed into disgust. He has singlehandedly taken this game and turned into something dark - the way he uses the rules to advance. Yes. He has a keen mind, but is he wasting his talent, or is he making up for the lack of it? He draws off sides penalties with his vocal inflection, and labels the linemen names. This fuels their fury, and results in angry, defensive players, who want to do harm. It's an odious strategy, like using the dark side of The Force. Look at the stats from this game; the Redskins should have won. But because of Rogers' antics, the Packers pulled off an incredible 35-18 score. I hope Rogers doesn't meet up with the Steelers in the Super Bowl, because if he does, it is going to get ugly. And I won't be watching.
